I really want to know what you thought when you first came through our front door.
Did it look legit, corny, fake, amazing? Let us know!

I am soooo happy to see that someone in this area has some environmental sense. I just moved here from Southern Illinois (Carbondale) www.siuc.edu and took things like recycling centers for granted. I have had the hardest time finding a recycling drop off for cardboard (or anything for that matter).
Do the counties around here not support recycling? We had a large recycling center in an old factory. You could drive in and drop off anything except old construction materials (ie old cabinets) The county sponsered the electronics recycling and recycled old monitors, computers, cords, tvs, cell phones, printers, and just about anything else electronic related. We could drop off ALL types of plastic. Are there places like that around here?

Here are a couple of articles about what is being done at places like SIUC that could be implemented elsewhere.

Keeping a list like this is also a useful tool

Also is there a community radio station here? We are missing

I hope to be a frequent contributor and visitor. We have been here only two weeks and are getting discouraged.

Welcome to Charleston, and welcome to Go Green!

First off, I'm originally from Indiana and love basketball - go Salukis! You have a great program there.

So I'm a transplant too, and I just have to say - don't get frustrated or discouraged. This is a great place to live, and there's lots of good stuff being done. I'll admit the Midwest is a little ahead of what I've seen down here, but things are moving along.

With regards to your recycling questions, the County does an OK job, though we're working to change a few things. You cannot recycling plastics #3 thru #7 anywhere in the tri-county area...though both Charleston and Dorchester are starting to talk about it. They also do not handle eWaste. So nothing like what you had.

You can take just about anything to the Bee's Ferry Landfill however. You can check the materials list here. If they can't recycling it, they'll toss it. The actual recycling center is downtown.

I love that materials list you linked to. Two things you can recycle here that weren't on that list. Junk mail and paperboard packaging containers. The paperboard collection is new here, but its impact is huge - cereal, soft drink, packaging, and other light boxes are all excepted. Unfortunately, currugated cardboard is not picked up curbside - that needs to change. Check out my "Weekly Trashed" posts on the blog for proof.

Anyhoo, I hope that helps. Don't get discouraged...we need green evangelists like you to help get things done. If you want to work on the maps project with me, send me a PM.
